Following the outbreak of the war against Ukraine, ‘green corridors’ was the official term for the evacuation routes used by civilians fleeing combat zones. This modern-day parable follows the journeys of four women from Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Bucha, and Kyiv as they head towards the European Union’s border, grappling with displacement, the harsh realities of refugee life, and shattered illusions.

Waiting on the other side of the border is a woman called Europe. She genuinely wants to help, but... As the characters await their ‘new lives’, deep-rooted conflicts begin to surface – tensions deeply entangled in both Ukrainian and European history. Who betrayed whom? Who profited from whom? Who collaborated with whom? Natalka Vorozhbyt delivers these uncomfortable truths as only she can: self-critically, with biting irony, and firmly from the perspective of ordinary people caught in impossible situations. In her work, despair is frequently laced with dark humour that serves as a vital tool for survival.

Vorozhbyt wrote Green Corridors specifically for the Munich Kammerspiele as part of a co-production with Kyiv’s Theatre on Podil. In the spring of 2023, the play was also staged at the Theatre on Podil itself.

Natalka (Natalya) Vorozhbyt is an acclaimed Ukrainian playwright, screenwriter, film director, and curator of theatrical and social projects. Regarded as one of the most successful Ukrainian voices of her generation, she has been shaping contemporary Ukrainian drama and documentary theatre since 2010. Vorozhbyt is the author of around twenty plays. Her most notable works include The Grain Store, The Maidan Diaries, Bad Roads, and Take the Rubbish Out, Sasha – the latter has also been staged in Lithuania. In her work, Vorozhbyt explores urgent, often painful themes from Ukraine’s past and present. In March 2022, she was awarded the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine.

Maksym Holenko is one of Ukraine’s most prominent and dynamic theatre directors. With over 50 productions to his name, his work has been widely recognised with numerous national and international awards. Since 2023, he has headed the Maria Zankovetska National Theatre in Lviv.
